ISU food science and human nutrition chair named to governor's economic development board

Ruth MacDonald, professor and chair of the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Iowa State, was appointed by Governor Chet Culver today to the Iowa Department of Economic Development Board. MacDonald will represent the life sciences industry on the board.

Presidential candidates to speak as part of caucus lecture series

Two Republican presidential candidates will be on campus next week as part of the Lectures Program's Presidential Caucus Series. Ron Paul will speak at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct 26, in the Memorial Union Campanile Room. Tom Tancredo will speak at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, in the Memorial Union South Ballroom. The lecture series provides the university community with opportunities to question candidates or their representative before the precinct caucuses.

Two businesses with ISU ties win statewide Pappajohn Business Plan Competition

Two companies with Iowa State faculty founders finished first and second in the second annual statewide John Pappajohn Business Plan Competition. It is the second consecutive year that companies with Iowa State ties earned the top two prizes.

Lisa Schulte, ISU assistant professor of Natural Resource Ecology and Management, has found that forests in the Upper Midwest have changed greatly since the time of the early settlers.

James Autry to speak at ISU Oct. 23

James Autry, a popular author and lecturer on business ethics and leadership, will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 in the Memorial Union Sun Room. A book signing and reception will follow his lecture, "Hard Choices: How to Make the Right Decisions at Work and Keep Your Self-Respect." All events are free and open to the public.

New ISU education professor Scott McLeod to receive two more national awards

Scott McLeod, an associate professor of education leadership and policy studies at Iowa State, was recently named one of the National School Boards Association's "20 to Watch" educators in 2007 -- an honor being awarded Tuesday in Nashville. He'll also be honored as an "emerging leader" by Phi Delta Kappa, an international association for professional educators, during a Friday ceremony in Vancouver.

Iowa State engineers hope to build better roads by using ethanol co-products

An Iowa State University research team will do lab tests to determine whether lignin, a co-product of ethanol produced from plant fiber, could be mixed with soil to improve soil strength in roadbeds. That would make for better roads in Iowa and the Midwest.

ISU researchers pass findings on home-based child care to Iowa legislators

ISU Associate Professor of Human Development and Family Studies Susan Hegland and Kathlene Larson, research director of The Community Development - Data Information and Analysis Laboratory (CD-DIAL) at Iowa State, were invited to present a summary of their research on home-based family child care providers to Iowa legislators on the Home-Based Child Care Study Committee Wednesday.

U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) will be Iowa State's Fall 2007 Mary Louise Smith Chair in Women and Politics. The former First Lady and presidential candidate will present a free, public talk focusing on women and leadership on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at 5:30 p.m., in Stephens Auditorium, Iowa State Center.
