Low-income kids report first sexual intercourse at 12 years old in new ISU study

A new Iowa State study of nearly 1,000 low-income families in three major cities found that one in four children between the ages of 11 and 16 reported having sex, with their first sexual intercourse experience occurring at the average age of 12.77.

Lt. Gov. Patty Judge visits Reiman Gardens

Iowa Lt. Gov. Patty Judge visited ISU's Reiman Gardens on Aug. 11 -- a stop on what she called her "rock star" tour of the state's hottest travel destinations. Judge's "Travel Iowa '09" initiative is designed to let Iowans know about fun, affordable tourism attractions in the state. Reiman Gardens was named Iowa's "Attraction of the Year" in 2008 by the Iowa Tourism Office and the Travel Federation of Iowa.

Thousands of ISU students returning to Ames for class; others study from distance

While more than 27,000 students are heading to Ames this fall, more and more Iowa State students are finding that going to class is just one way to get their education.

Iowa Power Fund research

Iowa Gov. Chet Culver toured Iowa State research labs Wednesday, Aug. 5, to learn how the Iowa Power Fund is advancing solar cell research and development. The fund is supporting solar cell and renewable energy projects at Iowa State. The governor noted how the state funding is helping researchers attract additional funding from businesses and the federal government.

State fund advances swine vaccine research, six other Iowa State projects

The State Board of Regents has approved $679,663 in competitive grants from the state's Grow Iowa Values Fund, a state economic development program. The grants will support seven new projects with the goal of developing technologies with commercial potential and supporting the growth of companies using those technologies.

College of Design hosts curated "30 and Beyond" alumni exhibition Aug. 3-Sept. 26

Thirty years ago, Iowa State's College of Design opened its doors to thousands of students pursuing their passion to create. Now, under the direction of a distinguished curator, the college will exhibit 30 pieces of alumni creative work. "30 and Beyond: College of Design Alumni Exhibition," is curated by David Revere McFadden, chief curator and vice president for programs and collections at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. The 30 pieces in the exhibition range from fiber and metals to award-winning buildings and a 1,347-acre park.
