Iowa State University researchers have developed a virtual
biorefinery control room based on ethanol and biodiesel plants
in Iowa. The system is designed to teach students and workers
to efficiently run a biorefinery. The simulations take into
account more than 20 production attributes including moisture,
starch content, contaminants, temperature and particle
size.

Big 12 signs 13-year cable rights deal with Fox Sports
The Big 12 Conference has reached a landmark 13-year cable rights agreement with Fox Sports Media Group to televise a minimum of 40 football games annually beginning in 2012. "Today's announcement is the culmination of last summer's talks in which I joined with my fellow presidents and chancellors to chart a strong future for the Big 12 Conference," said Iowa State University President Gregory Geoffroy. "All 10 schools will benefit significantly from this contract, which further strengthens the long-term commitment that our member institutions made to one another last summer."

Classroom technology: Technologies teach students how to think
In Holly Bender's clinical pathology lecture at Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, students are studying blood gases - the oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen dissolved in blood. Working in groups, they feed their analysis of the subject animal's lab data and symptoms into their tablet computers, and their answers are tabulated and displayed on the lecture hall screen.

Little did Max and Lorene Mugge know, the paper-cup seedling they received at Veishea 60 years ago would grow and thrive and weather life's storms, just like their marriage. The 50-foot white pine is now their "anniversary tree." All but one of the Mugges' children, and then their grandchildren, attended Iowa State.
