New ISU education professor Scott McLeod to receive two more national awards
Scott McLeod, an associate professor of education leadership and policy studies at Iowa State, was recently named one of the National School Boards Association's "20 to Watch" educators in 2007 -- an honor being awarded Tuesday in Nashville. He'll also be honored as an "emerging leader" by Phi Delta Kappa, an international association for professional educators, during a Friday ceremony in Vancouver.
Iowa State engineers hope to build better roads by using ethanol co-products
An Iowa State University research team will do lab tests to determine whether lignin, a co-product of ethanol produced from plant fiber, could be mixed with soil to improve soil strength in roadbeds. That would make for better roads in Iowa and the Midwest.
Iowa State researchers contribute to Nobel-Prize winning climate change panel
Three Iowa State faculty -- Ray Arritt, Bill Gutowski and Gene Takle -- have contributed to the work of the Nobel-Prize winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
'Talk' topic: New campaign
ISU president Gregory Geoffroy and alumnus Roger Underwood will discuss Iowa State's coming fund-raising campaign on WOI Radio's "Talk of Iowa" program Oct. 16. Underwood is the campaign chair. ISU researchers pass findings on home-based child care to Iowa legislators
ISU Associate Professor of Human Development and Family Studies Susan Hegland and Kathlene Larson, research director of The Community Development - Data Information and Analysis Laboratory (CD-DIAL) at Iowa State, were invited to present a summary of their research on home-based family child care providers to Iowa legislators on the Home-Based Child Care Study Committee Wednesday.
Iowa State professor's genome research published in the latest issue of Science
Martin H. Spalding, professor and chair of the department of genetics, development and cell biology at Iowa State, is part of an international research team whose work will be published in the Oct. 12 issue of the journal Science.
Author and former economic hit man to speak at ISU Oct. 18
John Perkins, author of "The Secret History of the American Empire: Economic Hit Men, Jackals and the Truth About Global Corruption," will speak at Iowa State University as part of the World Affairs Series. at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 in the Memorial Union Sun Room. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Former World Food Prize winner to give Borlaug Lecture
Monty Jones, who won the 2004 World Food Prize for his breakthrough development of a new rice variety bred specifically for Africa, will present the fifth annual Norman Borlaug Lecture at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15 in the Memorial Union South Ballroom. His lecture, "Agricultural Research and Food Security in Africa," is free and open to the public.
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is ISU's fall Mary Louise Smith Chair in Women and Politics
U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) will be Iowa State's Fall 2007 Mary Louise Smith Chair in Women and Politics. The former First Lady and presidential candidate will present a free, public talk focusing on women and leadership on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at 5:30 p.m., in Stephens Auditorium, Iowa State Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Iowa Central, ISU announce admissions partnership
Iowa State University and Iowa Central Community College have joined forces to make it more convenient for Iowa Central students who want to earn a bachelor's degree to transfer to Iowa State.
Forestry camp
ISU forestry students learn management techniques at a variety of area forests as part of a three-week fall camp operating out of Andulusia, Ala. ISU professors Jan Thompson (center) and Steve Jungst oversee the camp. Forestry camps at ISU began in 1914.

Gore glams up global warming fight -- again

Al Gore is embarking on one of the largest public service campaigns in history to raise awareness about climate change. TV, newspaper and Internet ads will attempt to convince people that they can do something about global warming. ISU Assistant Professor Jay Newell says the bandwagon approach is the way to go in this case -- more effective than ads designed to boost brand image.
