Stopping the invasion of marine exotics
An Iowa State University researcher is working to stop invasions of zebra mussels, spiny water fleas and other exotic species that hitch rides in the ballast tanks of ships. The marine exotics can overwhelm native ecologies and cause billions in economic damage.
Man who helped eradicate smallpox to speak
William Foege, an epidemiologist who helped eradicate smallpox, will give a talk on campus Oct. 17. His talk is part of the Norman Borlaug lecture series.
Scholars converge to bridge art and science
Scholars around the world will converge on Iowa State Oct. 13-15 to talk about collaborations between art and science. Keynote speaker Arthur I. Miller of University College, London, will kick off the symposium with a talk about Picasso, Einstein and the increasingly abstract art and science that followed their breakthroughs.There is no charge to attend the symposium, but advance registration is encouraged.
Another award for Stephens Auditorium
ISU's C.Y. Stephens Auditorium has received an inaugural 25-year award from the Iowa chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The new award recognizes an Iowa building (25 to 40 years old) that has outstanding and timeless architectural design. Last year, the Iowa chapter named Stephens Auditorium "Building of the Century." The Iowa chapter also recognized the Steve and Debbie Bergstrom Training Facility with a merit award.
Union ramp closed to public through Oct. 11
The Memorial Union parking ramp, which is undergoing repairs, is currently closed to the public. It's scheduled to reopen Tuesday, Oct. 11. Ramp construction updates and alternate parking options are on the Union web site at www.mu.iastate.edu.

Bowen named executive director of Iowa Lakeside Lab
Bonnie Bowen, a member of the ISU faculty since 1995, has been named executive director at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, Milford. Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, an educational facility on 140 acres on West Lake Okoboji, is operated cooperatively by the three Regents universities -- Iowa State, the University of Iowa, and the University of Northern Iowa.
'Murderball'star to campus Oct. 18
Mark Zupan, one of the stars of "Murderball" will speak on campus Oct. 18. The movie "Murderball" is about members of the U.S. Paralympic rugby team that won a bronze medal in the 2004 Paralympic games in Athens, Greece.
Breakfast fundraiser to benefit Albright memorial fund
From 8 to 11 a.m. Oct. 8, Alpha Gamma Rho members will serve waffles, flavored syrups, sausage and beverages at their fraternity house, 201 Gray Ave. The cost is $5 per person or $4 in advance. All money raised will go to a memorial fund for Andrew "Ardie" Albright, an ISU sophomore and fraternity member who was killed in a Sept. 13 car accident.

Iowa's finest architecture over the past century is featured in an exhibit on campus Oct. 3-28.
Study will focus on urban trees and exercise
Iowa State researchers will do a study of walkers and runners in an effort to find out if vegetation along trails affects the activity levels of city dwellers.
