Finalists named for Ames Lab post
The search committee charged with finding a new director for the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory at Iowa State University has narrowed the field to five finalists.
$1 million Kresge Foundation challenge grant for veterinary hospital
The Kresge Foundation has approved a $1 million challenge grant toward the renovation and expansion of the Dr. W. Eugene and Linda Lloyd Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Book signing Saturday at the state fair
A book signing with architecture associate professor Thomas Leslie, author of "Iowa State Fair: Country Comes to Town," will be 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at ISU's state fair exhibit in the Varied Industries Building. Books will be for sale in the adjoining University Book Store booth.

An Aug. 12 fire at the Alpha Chi Omega sorority house in Ames has displaced the 45 Iowa State University students who live there, but no injuries were reported.

Making history
Along with the usual favorites (temporary tattoos, football schedule posters and university info), ISU's state fair exhibit in the Varied Industries Building features a historical look at the institution's 150 years of serving Iowans. The celebration of ISU's 150th carries up to the second floor of the building, where visitors will find quilts created for two ISU sesquicentennial contests. One of the quilts will be auctioned Aug. 19.

In their August meeting, the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, reviewed campus security measures, approved the university budget for the fiscal year and reviewed plans for a bioprocessing research lab.

Geoffroy part of Spellings' higher ed delegation to Latin America
ISU president Gregory Geoffroy will join U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings and seven other college and university presidents on a visit to Latin America to tout the importance of higher education partnerships and exchanges among nations. Spellings will lead the delegation to Chile and Brazil, where it will promote the value of U.S. higher education and discuss future international collaborations.

Dr. James R. Bloedel has been named chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine.
Promise of immigration reform is mostly talk for political candidates, ISU economist says
Presidential candidates no doubt will make immigration reform a key issue during this Saturday's (Aug. 11) GOP Straw Poll at Iowa State University's Hilton Coliseum. But an Iowa State economist who studies immigration and its effect on farm labor says political talk is cheap.

Snail may be climate change casualty

Commenting on a theory that climate change killed off the purple snail, ISU biologist Diane Debinski says the story, if true, probably won't be the last. "I think what we are seeing is the tip of the iceberg in terms of extinction events," she adds.
