Madden, on Monday's tragic incident
In the aftermath of the Monday morning Ames Police chase that ended on central campus with the death of a young man, Senior Vice President for Business and Finance Warren Madden provided comments on the university's response to the emergency. His letter appeared in the Nov. 6 Iowa State Daily and in Inside Iowa State.

Iowa State University will honor fallen soldiers in Gold Star Hall ceremony Nov. 8
Iowa State University's student union is named the "Memorial" Union for good reason. The building was created in 1928 as a memorial to Iowa Staters who died in World War I. Their names are engraved in the walls of the union's Gold Star Hall — the stained glass and column-adorned spatial expression of the memorial. Each year, the university holds a memorial tribute for fallen soldiers. The 2013 Gold Star Hall ceremony will be at 3:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, in the Memorial Union Great Hall. The ceremony is free and open to the public. Two soldiers will be honored and remembered through personal stories and photos.

Iowa State student leads 100,000-member international ag student association
Genna Tesdall flew on an airplane for the first time in her life in 2012. Now she's president of an international association of 100,000 students who study agriculture and related sciences in 40 countries around the globe. Tesdall is a junior from Ames majoring in global resource systems and agricultural biology. She was elected last August to lead the International Association of students in Agricultural and related Sciences (IAAS), and she's bringing their World Congress to Ames next summer.

Iowa State, Ames Lab engineers develop real-time, 3-D teleconferencing technology
Nik Karpinsky and Song Zhang have developed 3-D teleconferencing technology that's live, real-time and streaming at 30 frames per second. They say it took a lot of late nights to solve the technical problems associated with image capture, transmission and display. They also say the technology could be ready for smart phones in a few years.

Iowa State astronomer helps research team see misaligned planets in distant system
NASA's Kepler space telescope has helped astronomers see a distant planetary system featuring multiple planets orbiting their host star at a severe tilt. Iowa State's Steve Kawaler contributed to the study as part of the research team that studied regular changes in the brightness of the host star. The discovery is described in the Oct. 18 issue of the journal Science.

U.S. DOT awards Iowa State $5.2 million to establish Midwest Transportation Center
The U.S. Department of Transportation is supporting a new Midwest Transportation Center based at Iowa State University. A two-year grant of nearly $2.6 million will launch the center and its mission to develop data-driven performance measures of transportation infrastructure, safety and construction. In addition to Iowa Staters, the center includes researchers and students from five universities in Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska.

Iowa State building research and development program for bioplastics
Iowa State's Biopolymers and Biocomposites Research Team is working toward two long-term goals: Helping bioplastics capture at least 20 percent of the plastics market and transferring bioplastic technologies from the university to Iowa startup companies. Team researchers have won $6.5 million in research grants over the past five years. They're now working to build support for a proposed Center for Bioplastics and Biocomposites.
