Lilly Ledbetter, fair pay activist, will speak on campus Friday
Lilly Ledbetter, whose name graces the the first bill President Barack Obama signed into law, will speak at Iowa State on Friday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Sun Room. The former tire worker became an activist after the Supreme Court ruled against the pay equity lawsuit she'd won almost a decade before. In January 2009, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act became law, restoring the long-standing interpretation of civil rights laws and policies that allows employees to challenge any discriminatory paycheck they receive. ISU Seed Science Center, University of Nairobi to establish African seed institute
Through a $4.49 million grant from AGRA, Iowa State University's Seed Science Center, the University of Nairobi (UoN), the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center and private business experts are establishing a Seed Enterprise Management Institute at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences in Kabete, Kenya.

ISU sociologist works with USAID task force on rebuilding education in Haiti
Rebuilding Haiti's agricultural and educational
institutions after a severe earthquake struck the nation Jan.
12 will be the focus of a U.S. government task force that
includes Iowa State University sociologist Cornelia Flora.
Flora has been named to the Task Force on Haiti, with the goal
of figuring out how to rebuild the country's universities
and other institutions so they can improve how agriculture is
done in the Caribbean nation.
ISU and Grinnell memorial services announced for Jonathan Lacina
Iowa State University's College of Design will hold a
special ceremony in memory of Jon Lacina at noon on Thursday,
April 22, on the north side of King Pavilion, across from Lot
10. Design Dean Luis Rico-Gutierrez will speak, and the Design
Council and Graphic Design Student Association will plant a red
oak tree. Lacina's parents, Tom and Alesia, and brother,
Joe, will attend.
The family has announced memorial plans in Grinnell,
Lacina's hometown. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at
St. Mary's Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April
23. An 11:30 a.m. public lunch reception has been
moved to the Elks Club, 720 Third Ave., Grinnell, due
to the anticipated need for a larger venue. There will be no
graveside service.

Community memorials and funeral arrangements for Travis "TJ" Good announced
Faculty, staff and students in ISU's College of Engineering
and the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental
Engineering mourn the loss of civil engineering senior Travis
"TJ" Good, who died unexpectedly on April 13. Initial
lab tests at the hospital indicate the probable cause of death
as bacterial meningitis.
In celebration of Good's life and his influence on many
people throughout the university, the college and the
department have organized memorial events for the Iowa State
community.

Dr. Stephen Juelsgaard Creates Endowed Deanship in College of Veterinary Medicine
An endowed dean's chair has been established in Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine thanks to a $3 million commitment from Dr. Stephen G. Juelsgaard of Woodside, Calif. The endowed fund will provide perpetual funding for college priorities and will be administered by the dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine.
Two ISU landscape architecture seniors win international competition for park design
Landscape architecture seniors Andrew Kraemer and Adam Olson won the Park Pride International Student Design Competition and will share the $1,000 cash prize. The two created their 'Knoll Park" design in William Grundmann's community design studio. There were 33 entries in the competition. Olson, of Hudson, and Kraemer, of St. Louis, created their design, "Knoll Park," last fall in Associate Professor William Grundmann's community design studio. Classmate Stacie Ellickson, Boone, won an honorable mention for her design, "Loblolly Ridge Park."

Iowa State University graduate programs in agricultural engineering, higher education administration, analytical chemistry, statistics and printmaking rank among the country's top programs, according to the latest "America's Best Graduate Schools" rankings by U.S. News and World Report magazine.

Iowa State College of Business to host Big 12 MBA Case Competition April 23-24
Iowa State's College of Business will host this year's Big 12 MBA Case Competition on Friday and Saturday, April 23-24. Teams representing nearly all the schools in the Big 12 Conference will analyze a Harvard-style general business policy/strategic management case and present their findings and recommendations to a panel of judges.

Iowa State's Anderson returns to space
Clayton Anderson, who earned an Iowa State University master's degree in aerospace engineering in 1983, returned from his second trip to space on April 20. He blasted into space aboard Space Shuttle Discovery early Monday, April 5. Anderson did three spacewalks during the two-week Mission STS-131 to the International Space Station. In 2007, Anderson spent five months at the space station.
