One year to Iowa Caucuses, ISU profs assess evolving presidential field
Iowa State political science professors Dianne Bystrom and Steffen Schmidt assess the ever growing list of candidates for the Iowa Caucuses, which are just under one year away.
Iowa State study finds prevalence of overweight among Iowa prep linemen
A study by two researchers from Iowa State's Department of Health and Human Performance found that among linemen on 251 Iowa high school football rosters during the 2005 season, nine percent had body mass indexes that would be classified as adult class obesity.
Committee submits progress report on budget model
The committee working on a new budget model for Iowa State has submitted a progress report on the design and implementation of the model, which is now called the Resource Management Model. In the Jan. 22 report, the committee recommends continuing with the implementation process and offers some observations on institutional culture changes that will facilitate that process.

Geoffroy, Badenhope on WOI Radio's 'Talk'

ISU Assistant Professor of Sociology Susan Stewart says that a New York Times analysis of 2001 census results finding that 51 percent of U.S. women are living without a husband shouldn't come as a surprise given recent demographic changes.
ISU professors assess best way to score in Super Bowl ads
In spite of consumer technology that now allows viewers to "tune out" the ads, three Iowa State University professors who specialize in advertising and consumer behavior still find it to be a sound investment to spend the $2.6 million for a 30-second ad in the Super Bowl.
Reiman Gardens closed Jan. 23 due to water outage
Reiman Gardens will be closed to the public Tuesday, Jan. 23, due to a planned water outage at the facility. Workers will be upgrading water services in the area.
Reiman exhibit recalls famous ISU botanists
A plant exhibit at Reiman Gardens evokes memories of ISU botanist Louis Pammel and two of his illustrious students -- George Washington Carver and Ada Hayden. The "Stream of Passion" exhibit will be on display in the Reiman conservatory through April 1.
Activities to honor Martin Luther King Jr.
Several events in the ISU/Ames community will honor the memory of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Activities over several weeks will include birthday celebrations, a panel discussion and a lecture on King.
ISU seminar will present techniques to help noise-phobic pets
Thunderstorm anxiety and fear of loud, abrupt noises are common behavioral problems reported by pet owners, says Dr. Kim Langholz, a community practice veterinarian at Iowa State's College of Veterinary Medicine. Langholz will present a seminar, "Thunderstorm Anxiety and Noise Phobias," at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, in room 2532 Veterinary Medicine building to discuss ways to help pets modify behavioral responses.
Three Iowa State College of Design programs ranked high by practitioners
State's programs in architecture, interior design and landscape architecture are among the nation's best, according to a survey of practitioners by DesignIntelligence. All three Iowa State programs ranked in the top 15.
Towns selected for 2007 community visioning program
Twelve Iowa communities have been selected to participate in the Iowa's Living Roadways Community Visioning Program in 2007. The award-winning program integrates technical landscape planning and design techniques with sustainable community action to assist community leaders and volunteers in making sound and meaningful decisions about the local landscape.
Jersey Jewel to grace new ISU Dairy Farm
Norma "Duffy" Lyon, the state fair's "Butter Cow Lady" and a 1951 ISU animal science alumna, has created a bronze sculpture for the Iowa State University Dairy Farm. Jersey Jewel will be installed on the lawn of the new Dairy/Animal Science Education and Discovery Facility when it's completed later this year. For now, the bronze is in the Kildee Hall atrium.

"Dr. Politics" Steffen Schmidt, University Professor of political science, and WOI-AM's Katherine Perkins broadcast their "Talk of Iowa" show live from the C-Span Campaign 2008 bus Jan. 22. C-SPAN videotaped the show so its viewers will be able to watch later this week.

Survey illuminates teen social networks

Michael Bugeja, professor and director of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, was cited in a national story about a Pew survey finding that 70 percent of teen girls, ages 15 to 17, had profiles on social networking sites, compared with 57 percent of boys in that age bracket.
