Alumni, friends, association honored during ISU's Distinguished Awards Celebration
The Iowa State University Alumni Association and the Iowa State University Foundation will recognize alumni, friends and a corporation with ISU's most prestigious honors during the annual Distinguished Awards Celebration Friday, April 15.
The awards ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the MU Sun Room and is open to the public. A reception will be held following the ceremony.
NASAs Kepler helps Iowa States Kawaler, astronomers update census of sun-like stars
NASA's Kepler spacecraft is allowing Steve Kawaler and an international team of astronomers to study changes in the brightness of 500 stars like our sun. The data will give astronomers a much better understanding of the stars, their properties and their evolution. The findings are published in the April 8 issue of the journal Science.

Starch-controlling gene fuels more protein in soybean plants
A gene newly discovered by Eve Wurtele and Ling Li introduced into soybean plants has increased the amount of protein in the plant's seed by 30 to 60 percent. People with protein-starved diets around the world could benefit.
Iowa State students will compete at premier human-computer interaction conference
Ten graduate students will present their work in the Student Design Competition at the CHI (Computer Human Interaction) 2011 ACM (Association of Computing Machines) Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in Vancouver, British Columbia. According to Conference Ranking.net, CHI (as it's known) is the conference of first rank in human-computer interaction.The competition asked students to design an object, interface, system or service intended to help users appreciate our human differences through the novel use of technology.
ISU symposium to focus on sustainability and co-existence issues April 19 - 20
ISU's Biosafety Institute for Genetically Modified Agricultural Products will host its eighth annual symposium, "Co-existence, Choice, and Sustainability for Crop Production," from 1:30 to 6 p.m. April 19; and from 8:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. April 20 at the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center, 2100 Green Hills Drive, Ames.
Iowa Board of Regents seeks feedback for ISU presidential search
What qualities should the Board of Regents look for in the next Iowa State University president? The Regents are seeking feedback. You can post your thoughts on this question. All comments will be public. In addition, the board will host an open forum from 5 to 6:30 p.m., April 27, in room 275, Scheman Building. Anyone who wants to discuss the leadership priorities and desired qualities of ISU's next president is invited.
Poet and human rights activist Nikki Giovanni will speak April 18
Nikki Giovanni, one of America's most distinguished and widely read African-American poets and essayists and a product of the 1960s' Black Arts Movement, will present a lecture, "Truth is on the Way," at 7 p.m. Monday, April 18, in the Memorial Union Great Hall. Well known the past 25 years for her outspokenness, Giovanni remains committed to fighting for civil rights and equality in education. She is the author of 30 books, including, "Black Feeling, Black Talk," and "Black Judgment." Her autobiography, "Gemini," was a finalist for the National Book Award. Giovanni's talk is free and open to the public.

Comic Amy Sedaris to speak April 11
Actress, author and comedienne Amy Sedaris will discuss her new book, "Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People," in a talk at 8 p.m. Monday, April 11, in the Memorial Union Great Hall. Sedaris got her start in Chicago's Second City comedy troupe, and co-wrote and starred in Comedy Central's "Strangers with Candy." She appeared in the movies "Elf," and "School of Rock," and voiced Cinderella in "Shrek the Third" and "Shrek Forever After." In her new book, Sedaris returns to the theme of domestic skills, following up her satirical guide to entertaining, "I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence." Her appearance is free and open to the public.
