Matthew Crawford, best-selling author of "Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry into the Value of Work," will discuss "The Case for Working with Your Hands" at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 24, in the Memorial Union Great Hall. Crawford is a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia. He also runs a motorcycle repair business. His talk is part of the university's National Affairs Series on Innovation, and is free and open to the public.

Mattel has leveraged digital reality events and social media to revamp its 52-year-old Ken doll. His face will be modeled after former Iowa State defensive lineman Kurtis Taylor, 25, who won over judges in the "romantic gesture" category. Mattel is readying a modeling contract for Taylor.
Smaller Walmart stores: A threat to local businesses?
A longtime foe of small business owners, big box retailer Walmart now is threatening to invade their space even further with the introduction of hundreds of new, smaller stores. This time around, though, experts -- including ISU Professor Emeritus Ken Stone -- believe small business owners may not be so outmatched.
