Pulitzer-winning journalist Clarence Page will speak at Iowa State Sept 14

Pulitzer Prize-winning, syndicated columnist Clarence Page will present the Chamberlin Lecture at Iowa State University on Wednesday, Sept. 14. "A Campaign Narrative: Why Iowa Matters-or Not," will be at 8 p.m. in the Memorial Union Sun Room. It is free and open to the public. Page won the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 1989. He has been a columnist and member of the Chicago Tribune's editorial board since July 1984.

Thomas Leslie is first Pickard Chilton Professor at Iowa State College of Design
Thomas Leslie, an internationally recognized expert on the history of technology and architecture, has been named the first holder of the Pickard Chilton Professorship in Architecture in the College of Design. Leslie is an award-winning teacher and author, and previously was architect with one of the world's leading design firms. He will be recognized in a campus ceremony Friday, Sept. 9.

The earthquake on the East Coast raises questions of a possible earthquake along the New Madrid fault. Geologists say there's a chance of a significant earthquake along the fault within the next 50 years, but ISU Professor Igor Beresnev says it's unlikely we'd feel major shaking in Iowa -- though scientists can't predict magnitude. "To predict weather, it's much easier because you can put a sensor in everyplace in the atmosphere. In the earth, we can't measure. We can't peek inside."
