Dialogue on Middle East with former Palestinian negotiator and former Israel-based journalist will be April 5

Ghaith al-Omari, a former Palestinian negotiator, and David Makovsky, a scholar and former political journalist based in Israel, will analyze current approaches to resolving the Middle East conflict during a panel discussion at Iowa State. "The Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process" will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, in the Memorial Union Great Hall. Part of the World Affairs Series, the talk is free and open to the public.

Kepler spacecraft gives Iowa State’s Kawaler, astronomers a look inside red giant stars

Iowa State University's Steve Kawaler is part of research collaborations that have used data from NASA's Kepler spacecraft to see into the core of red giant stars. The teams' findings have been published in Science and Nature. Kawaler said the discovery will help astronomers learn more about red giants. Our sun will evolve into a red giant in about 5 billion years.

ISU alumnus, bridal couture designer Matthew Christopher to give campus talk April 7

Iowa State graduate Matthew Christopher (Sobaski) -- now a prominent bridal couture designer as CEO of his namesake New York City bridal fashion house and manufacturer -- will discuss the path he took "From Small-town Iowa to New York Fashion Week" in a free, public lecture on Thursday, April 7, at 5 p.m. in the Memorial Union Great Hall. He will also serve as guest designer for ISU's Annual Textiles and Clothing Fashion Show 2011, on Saturday, April 9, at 7 p.m. in Stephens Auditorium.

Animal Planet's "Whale Wars" star Paul Watson to speak April 7

Paul Watson, who founded the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society -- the leading direct action ocean conservation organization -- will speak on "Whale Wars," at 7 p.m Thursday, April 7, in the Memorial Union Great Hall. Since 2002, Watson and his crew have attempted to stop Japanese ships from hunting whales in Antarctica. Their efforts are documented in the Animal Planet's series, "Whale Wars." Watson also is a co-founder of Greenpeace and the Greenpeace Foundation. The lecture is free and open to the public.

More than 550 young researchers show off projects, compete for scholarships

The State Science + Technology Fair of Iowa is Friday and Saturday, April 1 and 2, at Iowa State University's Hilton Coliseum and Scheman Building. The fair will bring 555 junior and high school students and their 424 research projects to campus. Public viewing hours for all projects are 12-5 p.m. on Friday. Junior high projects will also be on display from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free.

New mega cookbook co-author Chris Young will speak at Iowa State April 4

Chris Young, co-author of "Modernist Cuisine," the new mega cookbook rocking the food world, will speak at 8 p.m. Monday, April 4. His talk, "Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking," will be in the Memorial Union Great Hall. Young co-authored the 2,400-page, six-volume "Modernist Cuisine" with Nathan Myhrvold and Maxime Bilet. They achieved new flavors and textures by using tools such as water baths, homogenizers and centrifuges, and ingredients that include hydrocolloids, emulsifiers and enzymes. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Iowa State University President Gregory Geoffroy will step down

President Gregory Geoffroy today announced his intention to leave his post no later than July 31, 2012. He will remain president of Iowa State until a successor is named.
