ISU landscape architecture students and Mitchellville prison inmates and staff collaborate on new prison's grounds
Softball field ... butterfly garden ... yoga space ... greenhouse ... amphitheater. Sounds like a city park, right? Nope. How about the grounds of Iowa's new women's prison? At least that's the vision of some Iowa State landscape architecture students, based on their research and discussions this spring with offenders and staff from the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women in Mitchellville. They've worked together for the past three months, thinking outside the box of typical prison landscape design to envision something truly unique. And everyone is pretty pumped about what they've come up with.
Race car, replica filling station promote Iowa State Universitys biofuels research
Iowa State University will sponsor a NASCAR K&N Pro Series race car at the Iowa Speedway later this month to spread the word about the university's long history of developing biofuels. Iowa State researchers have been studying biofuels ever since three professors mixed corn alcohol and gasoline in the 1930s. Biofuels Digest recently named Iowa State its 2010 Institutional Research Facility of the Year.

Time is now for transformative change in agriculture, says ISU professor
The agricultural systems and processes that have developed in the past decades need to be re-examined, says Cornelia Flora, a distinguished professor in the Department of Sociology. She adds that reducing financial risks and improving sustainability are important to everyone and public policy should move in that direction.
ISUs graduate planning program ranks in top 13 nationally among non-Ph.D.-granting programs
Iowa State's graduate program in community and regional planning earned high marks in the latest survey by Planetizen, considered the leading online network for the urban planning, design and development community. The "Planetizen Guide to Graduate Urban Planning Programs" provides the only comprehensive rankings of graduate urban planning programs in the U.S. For 2012, Iowa State University is ranked 13th in the nation among 83 programs that do not grant a doctorate in planning.

The minute finals were over, a group of Iowa State students drove 800 miles to tornado-ravaged Alabama, where they are helping to clean up the hardest-hit areas. "All these other majors have labs. Chemistry has their own labs and industrial engineering has its own labs. We...just have a professor teaching us. Looking around at all the people displaced around their homes -- they can't teach that in a classroom. You have to live it to believe it," says ISU student Tristan Morath.
Economic studies of biofuels paint opposing pictures in gas price wars

A paper by Xiaodong Du and Dermot Hayes of ISU's Center for Agricultural and Rural Development (CARD) says ethanol production has reduced wholesale gasoline prices by 25 cents per gallon (on average) over the past 10 years. The study, funded by the Renewable Fuels Association, also warned that in the unlikely scenario that domestic ethanol production should be quickly and completely stopped, gas prices could skyrocket.

Bill Gallus, an Iowa State professor of geological and atmospheric sciences, hopes that research conducted in the aftermath of devastating tornadoes in the South will identify the factors that led to so many fatalities.
"Were people ignoring the warnings or did they not hear them?" he asks. "Or did they do what they were supposed to and the tornadoes were so intense they didn't have a chance of survival?"
