Sharp named interim chair for health and human performance
Rick Sharp, professor of health and human performance in Iowa State's College of Education, will become interim chair on Aug. 1. Sharp also holds appointments in biomedical sciences, and food science and human nutrition. He is also chair of the Iowa State Human Subjects in Research Committee and Institutional Review Board.

ISU selects new Veterinary Medicine dean
Dr. John Thomson, dean of veterinary medicine at Mississippi State University, Starkville, and a former Iowa State University faculty member, will become dean of ISU's College of Veterinary Medicine Aug. 16. He replaces Dean Norman Cheville, who is retiring. Thomson, a clinical epidemiologist, was selected following a nine-month nationwide search.

College of Business appoints Principal Financial Group Faculty Fellow
Mark Power, professor of finance in Iowa State University's College of Business, has been appointed the Principal Financial Group Faculty Fellow. The fellowship is for a five-year term, recognizing Power's research, service to the college and university, and commitment to teaching excellence.

ISU will take its (art) show on the road to 2004 State Fair
Ten works of art from the Iowa State University campus will be displayed in the Varied Industries Building at the Iowa State Fair Aug. 12-22. With 475 major public works of art, Iowa State University is home to the nation's largest public "Art on Campus" collection.

A bit of fat is good

Wendy White's research shows people need some fat with their vegetables or the body won't absorb the essential nutrients that can help prevent cancer and heart disease.
About four tablespoons of salad dressing would be an adequate amount of dressing for a large salad, said White, associate professor of food science and human nutrition. Fans of add-ons such as cheese, bacon bits, fried chicken, egg yolk and avocados should opt for a fat-free dressing, she said.
