Researcher helps identify gene responsible for healthier corn in developing areas
Maria Salas-Fernandez, an Iowa State University researcher, was part of team that is helping fill a nutritional hole in the diets of much of the population of developing countries. The group looked at how to introduce more vitamin A into corn hybrids to help cultures that depend on corn as a dietary staple.
ISUs annual Veishea celebration is under way
Veishea 2010 -- "Today's Vision, Tomorrow's Traditions" -- is set for April 12-18, and student organizers have packed the week with concerts, displays, lectures, performances and other great activities. Here are some highlights and a list of events.
Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression set for April 20
Seventy-three Iowa State undergraduates from all academic disciplines will display their research at the fourth annual Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression. The symposium will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, in the Memorial Union. The symposium provides undergraduates an opportunity to share their research with the university community, families and other guests through conference-style oral presentation sessions. The event is free and open to the public.
ISU student selected to be 2010 Udall Scholar
Samuel Bird, a second-year student in global resource systems and economics, has been named a 2010 Udall Scholar by the Udall Foundation. Bird was selected as one of 80 scholars from a field of applicants nominated by universities and colleges throughout the United States. Another Iowa State student -- Clark Colby, a senior in architecture and environmental studies from Urbandale -- received one of 50 honorable mentions. The Udall Foundation, established by Congress in 1992, awards scholarships to undergraduate students committed to careers related to the environment or Native American issues.
Iowa State student named Goldwater Scholar
Connor Schenck, a second-year computer science student from Ankeny, has been named a Goldwater Scholar for 2010-11. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate award in mathematics, natural sciences and engineering. Schenck is one of only nine computer science majors nationwide to be selected for the competitive scholarship. He is one of 278 recipients total. The award was announced today by the University Honors Program, which coordinates nominations and applications.

Veishea features late night with Dr. Drew on April 16
Producer and host of VH-1's "Celebrity Rehab," "Sober House" and "Sex Rehab," Dr. Drew Pinsky will host "Late Night with Dr. Drew" at 11 p.m. Friday, April 16, at Stephens Auditorium. Admission is free. Pinsky, a practicing medical doctor and host of the nationally syndicated radio show "Loveline," has been helping young adults with relationships, sexuality, and drug addiction problems for almost three decades. Immediately following Pinsky's talk, there will be a book signing downstairs in Stephens' Celebrity Cafe. More.
Alumni, friends honored during Iowa State University Distinguished Awards Ceremony
The Iowa State University Alumni Association and ISU Foundation will recognize alumni, friends and a corporation with the university's most prestigious honors during the annual Distinguished Awards Celebration on Friday, April 16. The awards ceremony will be held at 2:15 p.m. in the Memorial Union Sun Room. Everyone is welcome.

ISU College of Veterinary Medicine Offering Free Eye Exams for Service Dogs During May
The Dr. W. Eugene and Linda Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center at ISU will provide free eye exams to eligible service dogs - a $120 value at Iowa State -- during the month of May. Eligible dogs must be active working dogs (guide dogs, handicapped assistance dogs, detection dogs, police dogs, search and rescue dogs and formally trained and certified therapy dogs) that have been certified through a formal training program.
YouTube sensations will play at Veishea
Marlow and Frances Cowan of Ankeny, whose impromptu piano performance at the Mayo Clinic has reached 7 million viewers on YouTube, will play this year's Veishea celebration at 3 p.m. Saturday on the central campus stage. Marlow, 91, and Frances, 84, are both ISU alums. They'll play piano and handbells, and encourage audience participation.
Iowa State's Anderson returns to space
Clayton Anderson, who earned an Iowa State University master's degree in aerospace engineering in 1983, blasted back into space aboard Space Shuttle Discovery early Monday, April 5. Anderson was scheduled to do three spacewalks during the 13-day Mission STS-131 to the International Space Station. In 2007, Anderson spent five months at the space station.

The Des Moines Register
Iowa State University senior Brad Dwyer has spent the past two
years developing and marketing "Hatchlings," a
Facebook game that has 3.3 million players worldwide. Dwyer is
among 36 nominees for 2010 Prometheus Awards from the Iowa
Technology Association.
