9-30-99 Contacts: Diane Bystrom, Catt Center, (515) 294-3181 Steve Sullivan, News Service, (515) 294-3720 ISU INTERNATIONAL POLITICS CONFERENCE ATTRACTS SCHOLARS, WOMEN LEADERS AMES, Iowa -- International politics and the role women around the world play in them will be the focus of a conference sponsored by the Iowa State University's Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics and the International Studies Association-Midwest. The conference, which will feature several scholars and women political leaders, will be Oct. 8-10 at the Hotel Savery in Des Moines. Registration is $40 for the three-day conference and $12 for a Saturday luncheon featuring a presentation by Lynn Germain Cutler, a former Iowan who now serves as senior adviser on women's and Native American issues in the White House. Luncheon reservations will be accepted through Oct. 5 with a check payable to the Catt Center. Registrations for conference sessions can be made on site. The conference is expected to draw more than 100 participants, including scholars from throughout the United States, college students and members of the public. Nearly 80 scholars will present their research during 30 panel presentations. The presentations will explore such topics as women and politics in the developing world and in Europe, American foreign policy, women and political activism, collective security, women and public policy, political transitions and democratic processes, women and internationalism, international crisis and war, and international political economy. The conference also will feature several special presentations, keynote speakers and roundtable discussions by politicians, activists and authors. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Patty Judge will lead a discussion on "Iowa and International Agriculture" from 3 - 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8, Participating in the presentation will be Peg Armstrong-Gustafson, vice president and director of world wide product marketing at Pioneer Hi-Bred International; State Rep. Effie Lee Boggess (R-Clarinda), a member of the House agriculture, economic development and environmental committees; and Helen Jensen, ISU professor of agriculture and economics. Michael Brecher, president of the International Studies Association and Angus professor of political science at McGill University, will deliver a keynote address at 5 p.m. on Friday. He is the author several books on international relations, including "The Foreign Policy System of Israel" and "A Political Biography of Nehru." Saturday's program will include roundtable discussions with authors of two recent books, a luncheon featuring remarks by Cutler, and presentation of the 1999 Carrie Chapman Catt Prize for Research on Women and Politics. From 10:15 - 11:45 a.m., Todd Sandler, ISU distinguished professor of economics and political science, will chair a roundtable discussion of his book, "The Political Economy of NATO: Past, Present and into the 21st Century," and Ernestine Schlant Bradley, professor of German and comparative literature at Montclair State University, will lead a conversation about the Holocaust. She is the author of "The Language of Silence: West German Literature and the Holocaust." Barbara Pleasants, ISU assistant professor of zoology and genetics who teaches a class on the Holocaust and a new course on biology and prejudice, will lead the conversation. Saturday's luncheon from noon to 2 p.m. will feature a presentation by Cutler on "Women in the World: The Challenges Ahead." A 1998 inductee into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame, she currently serves as senior adviser to the chief of staff at the White House on Native American issues and senior adviser to Vice President Al Gore on women's issues. Recipients of the Carrie Chapman Catt Prize for Research on Women and Politics also will be honored at the luncheon. They will discuss their research projects on women's voting behavior in the decade following suffrage, gender differences in the goals and effectiveness of U.S. Senators, and feminism and guerrilla politics in Latin America on a panel from 2:15 - 3:45 p.m. on Saturday. Supporting sponsors of the conference are the national International Studies Association, ISU Institute for Theoretical and Applied Physics, and the Iowa Council for Understanding and the ISU Political Science Department. Registrations for the three-day conference, at $40 a person, can be made on site or mailed to the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics, 309 Catt Hall, Iowa State University, Ames, IA 50011-1305. Reservations for the luncheon, with a $12 check payable to the Catt Center, must be received at the center by October 5. Those making reservations for the luncheon, but not registering for the entire conference, also are invited to attend the roundtable discussion on the Holocaust before lunch and the presentations by Catt Prize recipients following the luncheon.
