The dedication will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a breakfast and building tours, followed by a program at 9:30 a.m. Several officials will speak at the dedication, including ISU President Martin Jischke, U.S. Rep. Leonard Boswell and Board of Regents, State of Iowa, President Owen Newlin. Iowa State and the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) recently signed an agreement to jointly operate the $9.6 million National Swine Research and Information Center. The center will be used for research on pork industry issues. Initial research work at the center will focus on developing nutritional and microbiological approaches to reducing hog odor while also increasing feed efficiency, hog reproduction and growth. Two ISU departments -- agricultural and biosystems engineering and animal science -- will share the 52,000-square-foot building with the National Pork Producers Council and the USDA-ARS. The federal government built the National Swine Research and Information Center to bring together in a single facility research on pork industry problems, such as odor, water quality impact, animal health and worker safety.
