IOWA STATE TO SPONSOR INFANT LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University’s College of Education will host a three-week, 12-lesson infant and toddler (younger than the age of two) swim program from Nov. 1 to Nov. 18 in the swimming pool of the Barbara E. Forker Building. Registrations are due Oct. 27.

The program is open only to residents of Ames and nearby communities due to limited enrollment, Kathi Thomas-Thomas, associate professor of health and human performance, said. Classes meet every Monday and Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m. The cost is $60.

Parents and children will attend sessions together to develop a routine that helps the young people to become comfortable in water, said Thomas-Thomas. Parents will also learn behaviors that increase their children’s safety around water and practice techniques that will help their youngsters to swim.

Children will learn activities such as moving between two people, how to properly hold their breath, and how to turn underwater, Thomas-Thomas said. Children who wear diapers must wear "swimmies" or similar "made for the water diaper/pants" in one. Swimsuits on top of these are optional. Infants may bring a waterproof toy that floats. All participants should bring large, absorbent towels.

Thomas-Thomas has taught children swimming for 30-years. She also is author of the infant swimming guide used by more than 2,000 YMCAs nationwide. She is a member of the American Swimming Coaches Association where she works with the Learn To Swim program.

To pick-up application materials, call Kathi Thomas-Thomas at (515) 294-8677, or visit the department of health and human performance’s main office, Room 235, Forker Building.
