Several prominent women have been scheduled to speak at ISU in October as part of Women's Week observances. All the events are free and open to the public. Roberts will speak on "Women in Sports and the Media," at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7. Roberts is host for ABC's Sunday morning program, "Sport Day." She also contributes to "NFL Prime Time," providing reports and interviews from the field. She is play-by-play commentator on ESPN's WNBA games, and hosts "SportsLight," a prime-time interview program. As a college student in the early 1980s, Roberts was a standout performer on the Southeastern Louisiana University's women's basketball team. Julie Brinker, professor of theater at the University of New Hampshire, will speak on "Telling Our Stories: Margaret Sloss and Me," at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 6, in the Margaret Sloss Women's Center. Margaret Sloss, Iowa State's first women veterinary medicine graduate and a veterinary medicine faculty member, was Brinker's great aunt. Ernestine Schlant Bradley, professor of German and comparative literature at Montclair State University, will speak on "The Language of Silence: West German Literature and The Holocaust" on Friday, Oct. 8, at noon in the Gallery of the Memorial Union. Bradley is the author of "The Language of Silence: West German Literature and the Holocaust," which examines the work of post-war German authors as they reflect or fail to reflect on the genocide. Bradley is the wife of presidential candidate Bill Bradley. Mae Jemison, the first African American woman to go into space, will speak on "NASA, the Space Program and Everyday Life" on Monday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. in the Sun Room of Memorial Union. Jemison made world and U.S. history as the first woman of color to go into space when she flew as a mission specialist astronaut abroad the Space Shuttle Endeavour. Jemison is a professor of environmental studies at Dartmouth College and directs the Jemison Institute for Advancing Technology in Developing Countries at Dartmouth. Women's Week is sponsored by the Margaret Sloss Women's Center. Jemison's lecture is co-sponsored by the College of Engineering and the university-wide technology celebration. -30- |
