| 10-15-99 Contacts: Cathy Curtis, Education, (515) 294-8175 Kevin Brown, News Service, (515) 294-8986 TWO ISU COLLEGE OF EDUCATION OFFICIALS TO BE NAMED TO POSTS AMES, Iowa – Two administrators with Iowa State’s College of Education will be inducted into the Iowa Academy of Education on Oct. 28 in Des Moines. Walter Gmelch, dean of the ISU College of Education, and Jerry Thomas, professor and chair of the college’s health and human performance department, will be honored by the FINE (First in the Nation in Education) Foundation for their scholarly contributions to the field of education. Both Gmelch and Thomas came to ISU in 1998. Both men are active in state, national and international educational efforts and organizations. Gmelch came to ISU from Washington State University where he was interim dean, professor and former chair for educational leadership and counseling psychology. His research focus is in administrative leadership in public school and higher education. Thomas came to ISU from Arizona State University, Tempe, where he was a professor of exercise science. While there, he had served as an associate dean for the graduate college and chair of the department of exercise science and physical education. His research interest is children’s motor development. Other Iowa educators named to the academy are: Sandra Alper, University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls; and James Marshall and Robert Yager, University of Iowa, Iowa City. The five new members will join 10 Iowa scholars in the academy, a three-year-old organization that works to highlight educational policies and practices in Iowa by examining research, issues and trends.
