ISU HILTON CHAIR TO PRESENT TWO OCTOBER LECTURES

AMES, Iowa – Frank Gunstone, the 1999 Dean Helen LeBaron Hilton Endowed Chair in Iowa State University’s College of Family and Consumer Sciences (CFCS), will present two lectures in October. Both lectures are free and open to the public.

Gunstone, a lipid (fats and oils) chemist, is a professor emeritus at St. Andrews University, Scotland, and a scientist at the Scottish Crops Research Institute in Dundee, Scotland. He will speak on "Feeding the Multitude – Where is Tomorrow’s Equivalent of the Five Loaves and Two Fishes?" on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 8 p.m. in LeBaron Hall Auditorium, Room 1010. Refreshments will be served at 7:30 p.m.

Gunstone will speak on "Feeding the Favoured – Tailor-Made Fats," on Thursday, Oct. 28, at 8 p.m., in the Molecular Biology Building Auditorium, Room 1414. Refreshments will be served at 7:30 p.m.

Gunstone is the author of "The Lipid Handbook," considered to be the "bible of lipid chemistry," said Suzanne Hendrich, professor in food science and human nutrition and associate dean for academic programs for CFCS.

He is also the author of "Fatty Acid and Lipid Chemistry," and has published more than 300 papers on the synthesis of fatty acids and identification of novel fatty acids, Hendrich added.

Gunstone also is a fellow of the American Oil Chemists’ Society (AOCS), the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He has received several international awards, including the Lipid Award of the AOCS, the Chevreul Medal (France) and the Normann Medal (Germany).

Established in 1995, the Hilton Chair was endowed by a gift in excess of $1.3 million from the estate of Helen LeBaron Hilton. Hilton served as dean of the ISU College of Home Economics (now Family and Consumer Sciences) from 1952-1975.

"We are thrilled to have a person of professor Gunstone’s reputation here this fall," CFCS Dean Carol Meeks said. "The nature of the Hilton Chair has allowed us to focus on different areas, both college-wide and by subject matter."
