11-24-99 Contacts: Alan Marcus, History, (515) 294-5956 Skip Derra, News Service, (515) 294-4917 ENGINEERING IN A MODERN WORLD IS TOPIC OF TALK AMES, Iowa -- The role of engineering education in the modern land-grant university is the theme of a talk that will be given at Iowa State University at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 1, in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union. Howard Segal, Bird and Bird Professor of History at the University of Maine will give the talk, "Rethinking Engineering and Higher Education: The Kellogg Commission in Historical Context." Segal is the author of Future Imperfect; Technological Utopianism in American Thought; and Technology, Pessimism and Postmodernism. The talk is the second in a series of four being held at Iowa State in celebration of the 20th anniversary of ISU's History of Science and Technology program, said Alan Marcus, professor of history. Additional speakers in the series are Deborah Douglas, MIT, January 18, and Terry Reynolds, Michigan Technological University, March 28. All of the subjects deal with role of engineering and technology in the modern land-grant university. - 30 - |
