ISU, UNITED WAY TO OFFER NONPROFIT MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University and the United Way of Central Iowa have combined their expertise to offer a nonprofit management institute in Des Moines.

The Nonprofit Management Institute was created by ISU in partnership with the United Way Management Assistance Program to enhance the management skills of those serving nonprofit human services groups, hospitals, government agencies, churches, private schools, arts organizations, environmental groups, and others in the nonprofit sector.

Institute participants can enroll in individual classes, or a program leading to a certificate in nonprofit management. To earn a certificate, a student must complete any combination of classes totaling eight Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Participants can choose from 13 courses, which will be offered from September 1999 through June 2000.

Most courses cost $25, and CEUs are available at no additional cost. Classes will be offered at the Human Services Campus, United Way Conference Center, 1111 Ninth St., Des Moines, IA 50314

"The institute has been designed for anyone seeking professional development in the area of nonprofit management or to advance their career in the nonprofit sector," said Tim Borich, assistant dean of the ISU College of Design and a coordinator for the nonprofit management program.

Courses will focus on a variety of nonprofit issues, including working with volunteer boards, leadership, financial management, grant writing, human resource management, legal issues, volunteer recruitment and management, marketing and fund-raising.

Certificate program faculty include Tim Acton, president of Bishop Drumm Foundation, and vice president of the Mercy Foundation; Roger Baer, assistant dean of the ISU College of Design; Karen Boscaljon, president of Boscaljon Training & Development; William Boyd, University of Iowa president emeritus; Don Broshar, ISU Extension Staff/Organization Development Specialist; Jamie Ferrare, dean of the Drake University School of Education; Walter Gmelch, dean of the ISU College of Education; Stuart Huntington, ISU Extension Community Development Specialist; Phyllis Lepke, ISU Foundation director; and Nancy Shafer, director of Volunteer Services for Iowa Lutheran, Iowa Methodist, and Blank Childrens Hospitals.
