ISU LEADS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITIES
AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University is spearheading an international conference of agricultural universities in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, July 22-24. Several ISU officials, including President Martin Jischke, are attending the conference.
The conference, titled "Leadership for Higher Education in Agriculture," is the first major project of the Global Consortium of Agricultural Universities. The conference will address issues such responding to the challenges of global population increases, fostering global cooperation, and sharing technological developments.
ISU helped create the Global Consortium of Agricultural Universities in September 1998, in Kiev, Ukraine, "in response to the urgent need to solve global food security and environmental problems," said Jischke, who is the Amsterdam conference's keynote speaker.
"Consortium founders agreed that the solutions to such complex global problems will require a concerted, coordinated and sustained effort by top agricultural and environmental researchers and educators throughout the world," Jischke said.
Walter Gmelch, dean of the ISU College of Education, also will speak at the conference on the latest trends in educational leadership.
Other Iowa State officials attending are David Topel, dean of the College of Agriculture; Stan Johnson, vice-provost of the ISU Extension Service; David Acker, director of international programs for the College of Agriculture; and John Kluge, professor of veterinary pathology.
The event was sponsored by the Farm Foundation, Oak Brook, Ill.; the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organizations, Paris, France; the United States Agency for International Development, Washington, D.C.; and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Battle Creek, Mich.
