| 12-7-99 Contacts: Mara Bernson, Conference Services, (515) 294-6885 Robert Meyer, Iowa Shrine All-Star Football Game, (515) 223-8999 Steve Sullivan, News Service, (515) 294-3720 IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY TO HOST SHRINE FOOTBALL GAME AMES, Iowa --- Iowa State University will host the 28th annual Iowa Shrine All-Star Football Game on Saturday, July 29, 2000. The game will be played at Jack Trice Stadium. The Iowa Shrine's North vs. South game offers a view of the state's best high school football athletes. Players will be announced the end of January. They are selected by Shrine Bowl coaching staff from nominations received from players' high school football coaches. Players will arrive in Ames on July 18th for practice and other activities, including a trip to the Shrine Hospital in Minneapolis. The Shrine All-Star football game also features a cheerleading squad of 60. Members of the squad are chosen after tryouts held in Ames early next year. Cheerleaders are invited to the tryouts on the basis of high school coach nominations. The Shrine Bowl's goal is to raise awareness and funds for Shriner Hospitals for children. All ticket and sponsorship proceeds will benefit children in Iowa who need services provided by Shrine Hospital's orthopedic and burn institutes. All care is provided at no charge to the patients and their families. There are 22 Shriner Hospitals in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Iowa State University and Ames began planning the event with Shrine officials this past summer. This is the first time Ames and Iowa State University have hosted this event. Tickets for the Iowa Shrine All-Star Football Game will go on sale in early spring. -30- |
