IOWA STATE DAILY ESTABLISHES SCHOLARSHIP TO BENEFIT JOURNALISM STUDENTS

AMES, Iowa -- The Iowa State Daily, the student newspaper at Iowa State University, has pledged $100,000 to create two scholarship programs.

One program will provide $7,500 annually for tuition scholarships. The second will provide $2,500 each year for professional development scholarships that will enable students to attend conferences, workshops and conventions. Both programs will begin awarding scholarships for the fall semester 2000. The number of scholarships and amount of the awards will vary.

"It is very important for the Iowa State Daily to have a good relationship with journalism students," said Michael Gonsalves, a senior English major and chair of the Daily Publication Board. "These scholarships will help to foster the program by providing incentive for new and returning students to get involved."

Journalism students who are current Daily employees as well as outstanding high school seniors who will work at the Daily and major in print journalism will be eligible for both scholarships. A committee of Iowa State Daily staff members and ISU Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication faculty will select recipients and determine award amounts. Interested students should contact the Iowa State Daily for more information.

"The ISU Daily plays an important educational role in providing outstanding experience and leadership opportunities for journalism students. We are most grateful for this scholarship program initiated by the Daily that will help attract and support top students," said John Eighmey, chair of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication.

The Iowa State Daily gift was made to the Iowa State University Foundation as part of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication’s $18 million challenge campaign. Iowa State alumni Bob and Diane Greenlee of Boulder, Col., initiated the campaign in 1998 through a $9 million leadership gift, which transformed the program into Iowa State’s first named school. The Greenlee campaign, scheduled for completion in June 2000, has raised approximately $14.7 million for the school.
