ISU COLLEGE OF EDUCATION RECEIVES $1.5 MILLION GRANT

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's College of Education has been awarded a $1.5 million grant to help prepare teachers to use technology in the classroom.

The U.S. Department of Education grant, announced Aug. 24, will fund efforts to give pre-service teachers in-classroom experiences involving teaching with technology. The pre-service teachers will work with students and professional educators. The grant will be used for programs in the Des Moines and North Polk community school districts, as well as initiatives with several organizations, including Heartland Area Education Agency 11.

ISU's teacher education program emphasizes the use of technology into the classroom to improve school children's learning. The college's Center for Technology in Learning and Teaching will be involved in the grant project. Ann Thompson, an ISU professor of curriculum and instructional technology and former director of the center, is the lead researcher on the project.

Vice President Al Gore announced $135 million in U.S. Department of Education grants designed to train 400,000 new teachers to use technology in the classroom. Almost $3.5 million came to the state of Iowa. Other Iowa schools receiving grants were the University of Northern Iowa ($1.6 million); Clarke College ($147,290); Iowa Central Community College ($69,049); and Iowa Western Community College, ($52,100).
