VEISHEA 1999 WILL BE APRIL 16-18

AMES, Iowa -- Veishea, Iowa State University's annual spring celebration, will be April 16-18.

"Building the Future" is the theme for Veishea 1999.

"This is the last Veishea of the 1900s and we want to look ahead to continuing the tradition in the future," explained Aimee Lee, who with Scott DeSotel, is co-chairing the student event.

Five student governing organizations--Government of the Student Body, Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, Inter-Residence Hall Association and the Veishea executive board--last fall renewed their pledges to promote an alcohol-free event this spring. The groups first agreed to the pledge prior to Veishea 1998.

Opening ceremonies will be Friday at 5 p.m. on central campus. Cyclone women's basketball coach Bill Fennelly will speak and the Cyclone women's basketball team will be on hand. President Martin Jischke also will speak.

The annual Veishea parade begins at 11:30 a.m. Saturday north of the Armory and follows its traditional route through campus, ending on the north side of the Memorial Union. Live parade coverage on KCCI-TV (channel 8) begins at noon.

The spring Cyclone football scrimmage will be at 2 p.m. in Jack Trice Stadium. Tickets are $3 for adults and $2 for 18 and under.

The Stars Over Veishea production this year is "Anything Goes," a musical by Cole Porter. "Anything Goes" performances will start at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. Sunday. All shows are in Stephens Auditorium. Tickets are $13 to $15 for adults and available at the box office in Stephens.

Cherry pies -- 8,000 of them this year--will be sold Friday and Saturday for $1 each. The pie stand is in 16 MacKay. Pie sales will be from 9:30 a.m. to approximately 2 p.m. Friday, and from 10 a.m. until they are gone on Saturday.

There will be more than 130 different open houses with over 100 organizations participating. Open houses will be going on throughout campus and include a cultural food fest in the Great Hall Saturday afternoon.

Taste of Veishea in campus town will feature food vendors and entertainment during Veishea weekend.

A pancake breakfast, featuring central Iowa's Chris Cakes, will be served from 7:30 to 11:30 am. Saturday on central campus. The cost is $4.

Other special events on Saturday include a canoe jousting competition in Lake LaVerne after the parade, a guest lecture by George Washington Carver author Peter Burchard at 5 p.m. in the Memorial Union Pioneer Room, and Harambee, a cultural performance organized by the Black Student Alliance, at 5 p.m. in the Memorial Union Great Hall.

Sunday morning options include a four-person, best-ball golf tournament at Veenker golf course ($100 entry fee per team) and a 5K road race on central campus ($9 by April 9 and $15 after that).

Indoor concert events are scheduled again this year for the Iowa State and Ames communities Friday and Saturday nights. At 9 p.m. Friday in Hilton, the Grammy-nominated Goo Goo Dolls will be joined by New Radicals. At 9 p.m. Saturday in the Lied Center, comedian and actor Dave Chappelle will perform. Chappelle had roles in the films "Robin Hood: Men in Tights," "The Nutty Professor," and "Con Air."
