EXPERT IN DNA RECOMBINATION WILL SPEAK AT IOWA STATE

AMES, IOWA -- Franklin Stahl, a distinguished professor of molecular biology at the University of Oregon, Eugene, will give a talk on "Genetic Recombination," Wednesday, May 5, at 2 p.m., in 1420 Molecular Biology building.

Stahl's presentation will describe specific methods by which DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) undergoes recombination.

In the late 1950s, Stahl did research with Matthew Meselson that proved the fundamental mechanisms by which DNA replicates. More recently, Stahl's research is in the area of DNA recombination, which can explain, for example, the mechanisms by which genetic traits are passed from one generation to another.

Stahl has been a member of the University of Oregon faculty since 1959 and was made a distinguished professor in 1998. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and serves on the editorial board of several scientific journals.
