PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING COMPOSER IN RESIDENCE AT ISU
AMES, Iowa -- Karel Husa, a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, will be an artist-in-residence at Iowa State University's music department, April 22-24.
Husa will hold the Louise Moen Endowed Chair in ISU's music department. Husa, the Kappa Alpha professor at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., is an internationally known composer. He has conducted orchestras throughout the world. His most famous work, "Music for Prague 1968," has been performed more than 10,000 times, making it one of the most frequently performed contemporary compositions.
Husa will hold public speaking events and ISU music groups will perform his works. Most events are free and open to the public.
Husa will do a question and answer period focusing on the composition process on Thursday, April 22, at 1:10 p.m. in the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall in the Music Building. At 7:30 p.m. on April 22, he will do a public lecture on "Social Conscience and the Artist" at the Martha Ellen-Tye Recital Hall.
On Friday, April 23, the ISU Symphony Orchestra, ISU Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band and Iowa State Singers will perform works by Husa. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. in Stephen's Auditorium. Tickets are $8 for adults $5 for 18 and under.
On Saturday, April 24, the ISU Faculty Chamber will perform Husa's works. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall. A public reception for the composer will be in the music hall lobby following the concert.
In addition to the Pulitzer Prize, the Czech-born Husa is the recipient of the Grawmeyer Award in Music Composition, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the American Academy and Institutes of Arts and Letters Award, and the National Endowment for the Arts awards. Czech President Vaclav Havel presented Husa with the Czech Republic's Medal of Merit in 1994 and the Medal of Honor of the City of Prague in 1998.
The Moen Endowed Chair in Music was established by Samuel and Louise Moen Hamilton to recognize exellence in music, support an artist-in-residence program and recruit faculty. The Hamiltons are alumni of Iowa State and long-time supporters of the ISU music department, civil engineering department, family and consumer sciences college, and the Iowa State Center.
