ISU CELEBRATES WOMEN'S WEEK THROUGHOUT FALL SEMESTER

AMES, Iowa -- The annual Women's Week celebration at Iowa State University has been extended to fill the fall 1998 semester with noteworthy women speakers, including several women activists, a woman astronaut and a cartoonist.

"Because the semester is filled with such a wonderful array of women speakers, we decided to transform this annual event into a semester-long celebration," said Alissa Stoehr, women's week co- chair.

The Women's Fall Celebration's theme, "The Politics of Feminism: Celebrating Diversity," is taken from the keynote address given by writer and activist Gloria Steinem.

Steinem will give her address at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13 in C.Y. Stephens. Steinem is the co-founder of the National Women's Political Caucuses, and the Women's Action Alliance and president of Voters for Choice. Steinem co-founded Ms. Magazine in 1972. Her books include "Moving Beyond Words" and "Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions."

"The Future of the US Space Program"

Sally Ride was the first woman in space when she flew aboard the space shuttle Challenger in 1983, and later headed the Presidential Commission investigating the 1986 Challenger Accident. She is a physicist on faculty at the University of California, San Diego, and author of the children's book "To Space and Back." Her other books include "Voyager: An Adventure to the Edge of the Solar System" and "The Third Planet: Exploring the Earth from Space."

Rachel Moran
"Diversity in a Post-Affirmative Action World"

Rachel Moran is professor of law at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, and has written on bilingual education policy and is working on a case involving desegregation and bilingual education in the Denver school system.
