STATEMENT ON VEISHEA
FROM ISU PRESIDENT MARTIN C. JISCHKE
04-19-98For our students, this year's Veishea celebration presented a substantial challenge: could they make it safe and alcohol-free? They met the challenge, and I congratulate them for helping make Veishea '98 a very successful event. Iowa State students showed that they were both willing and quite capable of carrying out this responsibility, knowing they did so under intense scrutiny.
By all measures, this Veishea was a safe and enjoyable one. Attendance at events throughout the weekend was impressive, and it was evident that participants enjoyed the many different activities. Reports from the Iowa State Department of Public Safety and the Ames Police Department indicate arrests and citations were down dramatically from last year.
Special thanks go to the leadership of this year's Veishea, co-chairs Kathryn Whitaker and Ben Dohrmann, for their commitment and enthusiasm. I also want to thank the many other student volunteers, our faculty and staff, the leadership of the city of Ames, and local businesses who were determined to make this Veishea safe, alcohol-free and memorable.
