ISU CLASS STAGES HOMECOMING MARDI GRAS PARADE

AMES, Iowa -- Hundreds of Iowa State University students will celebrate homecoming with a Mardi Gras-style parade on central campus on the evening of Thursday, Oct. 8.

More than 300 students from landscape architecture professor Bill Boon's Creativity course will participate in the parade, which will begin at 8 p.m.

The parade is one of Boon's unique class assignments that challenge students to stretch their creative abilities. The students, working in small teams, will create portable parade floats for the parade. Each float must be built from at least 40 X 60 sheet of cardboard. The float has to be carried by one team member. The other members of the team also are required be in the parade.

The theme for Boon's class assignment is "face-off," an allusion to the homecoming gridiron competition. In conjunction with the theme, the parade is likely to feature a lot of interesting masks, said Boon.

The parade will start at the College of Design, proceed up Osborne Drive and then turn onto Morrill Road, where it will pass by Beardshear Hall. The parade will end at the campanile, where there will be a concert at 9:30 p.m.

Other students are invited to participate in the parade, though they must follow the same requirements at the creativity class students, said Boon.
