GIFT ESTABLISHES PROFESSORSHIP IN ISU COLLEGE OF BUSINESS

AMES, Iowa -- A $300,000 deferred gift from Roger Murphy, associate professor of accounting at Iowa State University, has established the Roger P. Murphy Endowed Teaching Professorship in Accounting.

"The emphasis of this gift is on undergraduate teaching as opposed to research," said Murphy. "The professorship is designed to attract and support an outstanding undergraduate educator in accounting for the college of business."

Murphy joined the college of business faculty in 1969. His research interests include not-for-profit and governmental accounting. Murphy received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Colorado State University, Fort Collins.

Murphy's gift is part of "The Drive from Within," the university component of Iowa State's capital campaign, Campaign Destiny: To Become the Best. Conducted by the ISU Foundation, the campaign is aligned with Iowa State's strategic plan to become the best land- grant university in the nation. It is the largest campaign in ISU history with a five-year goal of $300 million.

The Drive from Within has a $10-million goal and currently is at $8,750,839.

"The generosity of current and retired faculty and staff is exciting," said Labh Hira, associate dean for the College of Business and co-chair of The Drive from Within. "Roger Murphy's gift exemplifies his dedication to students. Through this legacy, he will continue to make a tremendous difference in the quality of undergraduate education at Iowa State University far into the future."

Hira co-chairs the drive with his wife, Tahira Hira, professor of human development and family studies and interim associate vice provost for extension; and George and Agatha Huepenbecker Burnet. George Burnet is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering. Agatha Huepenbecker Burnet is professor emeriti of textiles and clothing.
