SCHOLAR TO VISIT ISU AS MARY LOUISE SMITH CHAIRAMES, Iowa -- Ruth B. Mandel, the 1997-98 Mary Louise Smith Chair in Women and Politics at Iowa State University, visit campus April 5-7 and give presentations in Ames and Des Moines.
Mandel, a nationally known scholar and speaker on women and leadership, is the director of the Eagleton Institute of Politics and a professor of politics at Rutgers University, N.J.
Mandel's spring 1998 visit will begin with a presentation, "Moving Forward Together: A Women's Political Movement," at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 5, at the Olmsted Center at Drake University in Des Moines.
This event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by ISU's Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics and the Pi Sigma Alpha political science honorary at Drake University.
A reception to celebrate the legacy of the late Mary Louise Smith and to honor Iowa's women political leaders will follow the lecture.
On Monday, April 6, Mandel will meet with the ISU Faculty Women's Network from noon to 1 p.m. in 302 Catt Hall to discuss "Women in Higher Education." Participants are invited to bring a brown bag lunch for the discussion.
Mandel will talk about "Politics and Public Relations" with ISU students in Principles of Public Relations, a course taught by journalism and mass communication professor Jane Peterson, from 2:10 to 3 p.m. on April 6 in 102 Hamilton Hall.
Mandel also will participate in the Catt Center's Annual Strong- Minded Women's Reception, Dinner and Awards Ceremony on April 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. in Campanile Room and the Great Hall of the Memorial Union and introduce Anita Hill's public lecture, "Speaking Truth to Power," at 8 p.m. in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union.
On Tuesday, April 7, Mandel will lead a symposium, "Not One of the Boys: Then and Now," from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in 302 Catt Hall. The symposium, which is free and open to the public, will begin with a screening of the documentary film, "Not One of the Boys," which Mandel produced in 1984. A discussion with former and current Iowa women legislators will follow. Participants can bring their own lunch or can purchase a box lunch by contacting the Center, 309 Catt Hall, at 294-3181.
"We are pleased that Ruth Mandel and Anita Hill, who are personal and professional colleagues, could visit ISU in conjuntion with our Strong-Minded Women celebration," said Center director, Dianne Bystrom. "Both are strong-minded women who have contributed significantly to the discussion and scholarship on women in politics and the workplace."
