GRANT HELPS ISU DESIGN SHARED LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

AMES, Iowa -- A new shared leadership development program is being planned at Iowa State University. The Shared Leadership for Institutional Change (SLIC) initiative is funded in part by a $45,000 grant to ISU by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Battle Creek, Mich. James Melsa, dean of the ISU College of Engineering, and Corly Petersen Brooke, professor of human development and family studies and director of ISU's Center for Teaching Excellence, are leading the SLIC initiative.

A task force is developing a shared leadership model that will aid the individuals who will facilitate the changes needed to meet Iowa's future educational goals, Melsa said. The task force is comprised of people from ISU, Iowa's community colleges, businesses, government agencies and community groups.

"We will seek a shared leadership model that recognizes the involvement of many individuals at Iowa State and elsewhere," Melsa said. "This model will emphasize that change will be an important competitive weapon of the future. Responding to change will be a continuing aspect of our activities."

"We are enthused about this opportunity to empower individuals to affect positive change," Brooke said.

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation was established in 1930 to help people help themselves through the practical application of knowledge and resources to improve their quality of life and that of future generations.
