ISURF/OIPTT DIRECTOR CANDIDATES WILL VISIT IOWA STATE

AMES, Iowa -- Three finalists for the position of director of the ISU Research Foundation (ISURF) and the Office of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer (OIPTT) will be visiting Iowa State University during the next couple of weeks. Additional candidate visits may be announced later.

The three finalists are Kenneth Kirkland, director of the Technology Commercialization Office at Northern Illinois University, DeKalb; H. Walter Haeussler, director of patents and technology marketing and president of the Cornell Research Foundation Inc., Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.; and Lawrence Kennedy, senior director of commercial licensing and acquisition at Schering-Plough Animal Health, Mundelein, Ill.

The ISURF director manages Iowa State's intellectual property, protects the university's copyrights and trademarks, and is responsible for royalties that result from ISU inventions. OIPTT works in coordination with ISURF to bring new ISU innovations into the marketplace. The new director will succeed Alan Paau, who left Iowa State last December for a similar position at the University of California-San Diego.

Each candidate's visit will include an open forum from 3 - 4 p.m. at the Memorial Union's Oak Room. The schedule of visits are:

Kenneth Kirkland has more than 20 years experience in developing and acquiring new products and technologies. He has been at Northern Illinois since 1995. From 1980-95, Kirkland was manager of technology assessment and acquisition at American Cyanamid, Princeton, N.J., and from 1976-79 he was technical manager at Cyanamid International Corp., Zurich, Switzerland. Kirkland earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in weed science from Oregon State University, Corvallis.

H. Walter Haeussler has been at Cornell University since 1983. He is the president of the Cornell Research Foundation Inc., and is responsible for the patent and technology marketing operations of Cornell University. From 1972-83, Haeussler was with Jones, Tullar & Cooper P.C., Arlington, Va., rising to the position of managing partner. From 1963-72, he was an intellectual property attorney with PPG Industries, Pittsburgh. Haeussler earned a B.S. in chemistry from Bowling Green University, Bowling Green, Ohio, and a J.D. from Duquesne University School of Law, Pittsburgh.

Lawrence Kennedy has been at Schering-Plough Animal Health since 1989. His recent focus has been on negotiating and closing technology licenses, commercial agreements and acquisitions with third-party technology partners. From 1984- 89 he was at Coopers Animal Health Inc., rising to vice president of business development, and from 1979-84 he was with Welcome Animal Health Inc., rising to director of production. Kennedy earned a B.A. in biology/chemistry and an M.S. in microbiology from Emporia State University, Emporia, Kan., and an MBA from Rockhurst University, Kansas City.
