$300,000 FUND-RAISING EFFORT FOR NEW ICE ARENA LAUNCHEDAMES, Iowa -- A committee of Ames and Iowa State University representatives has been assembled to lead the private gift campaign for a new ice arena. The committee's task will be to raise $300,000 in private support for the arena project by July 1.
Members of the steering committee are: Ted Tedesco, Ames mayor; Scott Huebsch, McFarland Clinic; Tom Greenwald, McFarland Clinic; Daryle Vegge, Sauer-Sundstrand; Tom Reis, Ames Minor Hockey; Kathy Thomas, Ames Figure Skating Association; and, Murray Blackwelder, Iowa State University.
Several ISU Foundation staff also are supporting the effort. The ISU Foundation is managing the private gift campaign.
The new arena would be built on land adjacent to the existing arena on Green Hills Park Drive. The land was donated by ISU. ISU students allocated $1.7 million for the project through increased student fees. The City of Ames passed a $1.7 million bond issue for the project.
The $300,000 in private support is the third phase of project's needed funding.
The existing arena was built in 1978 and is owned by ISU and managed by the City of Ames. It is home to ISU's men's and women's hockey teams, intramural hockey, broomball, Ames Figure Skating Association, Ames Minor Hockey Association and Ames Adult Hockey. It is used for programs and classes by Ames Parks and Recreation and the ISU department of health and human performance.
The new facility will address problems caused by the arena's age, physical condition and high demand for use.
