HENDRICH TO BECOME ASSOCIATE DEAN IN FCSAMES, Iowa -- Suzanne Hendrich, professor of food science and human nutrition for the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, will become associate dean of undergraduate programs and educational technology on Aug. 5
Donna Cowan, who had been the associate dean of academic and international programs since 1982 for the college, has stepped down and will be a professor in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, Education and Studies.
Hendrich's responsibilities will include coordinating and facilitating undergraduate programs and curriculum, developing learning communities and outlining outcomes assessment. She will also focus on international programming, linkages and exchanges. Other duties will include supervising summer school programs, providing support for scholarships and awards, reviewing technology needs, and working on staff development.
Hendrich joined Iowa State University in July, 1987, and became a full professor in August, 1997. From September, 1995, to May, 1997, Hendrich was the interim co-director of the Center for Designing Foods to Improve Nutrition. She also earned the College of Family and Consumer Sciences faculty research excellence award in 1997.
Her research interests include a study of isoflavones (substances found in soybeans that may be cancer-preventing agents), toxicology, and a cancer-causing substance found in corn. Currently, she is researching the relationship between anti-oxidants in food and human health.
Hendrich earned a B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Ph.D. in Nutrition from the University of California, Berkeley,
