GIULIANI, PUTNAM FOCUS ON CIVIC CULTURE AT ISU EVENT

AMES, Iowa -- Rudy Giuliani, the mayor of New York City, and Robert D. Putnam, one of the country's leading political scientists, will speak on civic culture in America on Saturday, Nov. 14, at Iowa State University.

Putnam will speak on the decline of civic culture at 2 p.m. in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union. Giuliani will speak on civic culture in an urban setting at 3:45 p.m. in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union. Both events are free and open to the public.

Giuliani and Putnam will be at Iowa State for the annual Iowa Conference of Political Scientists, Nov. 13-14, which is expected to draw 150 political scientists and others to campus.

Giuliani was elected New York City's 107th mayor in 1993. Often mentioned as a potential Republican presidential candidate in 2000, Giuliani has received considerable attention for his efforts to make the New York City safe and cleaner. During his tenure as mayor, New York City has experienced a highly publicized drop in crime, a tourism boom and an economic upswing.

Putnam is Harvard University's Stanfield Professor of International Peace. He is the author of several books, including "Making Democracy Work: Civic Traditions in Modern Italy." The book was praised by the "Economist" as "a great work of social science worthy to rank along side de Tocqueville." Putnam is currently researching civic engagement and social trust in America.
