CHILDREN'S GARDEN CONSTRUCTION BEGINS

AMES, Iowa -- Construction is under way on a one-third-acre children's garden at the Reiman Gardens at Iowa State University. The newest addition to ISU's horticulture gardens will include several small structures, a small stream, and flower and plant beds.

"This will be a really nice addition to the gardens," said Nick Howell, superintendent of the Reiman Gardens. "Young people will enjoy many hands-on activities and have a good time learning about plant life."

The new garden will include a corncrib-like shelter for activities, a wooden covered bridge that spans a stream, a small amphitheater and decorative fountains. Construction will be completed this fall, and flowers, plants and sod will be put in place next spring. The children's garden dedication is planned for June 1999.

Cost of the project is $475,000, with funds coming from private sources.

Visitors to the Reiman Gardens will see another change this fall. Installation of an ornamental steel fence around the perimeter of the facility is about to begin. The six foot-high fence will increase security and better define the Reiman Gardens' boundary.

The Reiman Gardens consist of rose, herb, fragrance, campanile and wetland gardens. The facility is named for Roy and Bobbi Reiman, Greendale, Wis., who donated funds to build the gardens. Roy is a 1957 graduate of ISU. Five of the gardens' 14 acres are developed.
