SOUND MONEY'S CHRIS FARRELL TO SPEAK AT IOWA STATE

AMES, Iowa -- Chris Farrell, economics editor and commentator on public radio's weekly Sound Money program, will speak on "The New Math of Retirement" Monday, Oct. 5 at Iowa State University. Farrell's talk begins at 7:30 p.m. in Benton Auditorium of the Scheman Building, Iowa State Center. It is free and open to the public.

Farrell's talk opens a day-long retirement information and wellness fair Tuesday, Oct. 6, in ISU's Memorial Union. He will address surveys that indicate many baby boomers prefer to keep working in their "golden" years, whether in new careers, part-time in their old careers or as consultants. This approach give retirees more financial flexibility, but it also complicates the traditional saving and planning approach to retirement.

Farrell's visit to campus is sponsored by TIAA-CREF. At 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, he will be a guest on Talk of Iowa, a weekly call-in show on WOI-AM Radio (640 AM), Ames. He also will attend the retirement/wellness fair.

Farrell's career in journalism began with the ESPN program Business Times, for which he served as finance editor. He later joined Business Week as economics editor and, in 1994, was named one of the nation's most influential journalists by Forbes Media Guide.

While at Business Week, he joined Minnesota Public Radio as economics editor and commentator on Sound Money, and held both positions for more than 10 years. He left full-time work at Business Week in June 1996 to concentrate on radio (though he still writes occasionally for Business Week as a contributing editor).

"The fun part of the job is to make finance and economics accessible and meaningful, and to carry on a conversation with people," Farrell said.

Sound Money is heard each week on more than 130 stations nationwide, including WOI-AM, Ames, where it airs at 3 p.m. on Saturdays. It is produced by Minnesota Public Radio and distributed by Public Radio International.
