ISU FACULTY RECEIVE REGENTS EXCELLENCE AWARDS

AMES, Iowa -- Five Iowa State University faculty members received Regents Faculty Excellence Awards at an Iowa Board of Regents ceremony in Iowa City on Sept. 23.

The Regents Faculty Excellence Award is awarded to outstanding university citizens. Iowa State faculty honored were Ronald Grier, veterinary clinical sciences; Richard Horton, electrical and computer engineering; Richard Larock, chemistry; Mary Littrell, textiles and clothing; and Peter Orazem, economics.

Grier is a driving force behind the Companion Animal Fund, a campaign that has raised more than $3 million to improve veterinary medicine programs and services at Iowa State. He has developed new programs for veterinary medicine practitioners and pet owners, including workshops in euthanasia and stress in animals, and a "Pet Loss Hotline." In his 27 years at Iowa State, Grier has trained more than 3,000 students in surgical technique and theory.

Horton has been a member of the electrical and computer engineering faculty at Iowa State for 35 years. Horton has worked with thousands of students as a teacher and advisor. He was on the programming team for the installation of Iowa State's first computer-controlled scoreboards in both Jack Trice Stadium and Hilton Coliseum.

Larock's book, "Comprehensive Organic Transformations: A Guide to Functional Group Preparations," was so popular among chemistry students and career chemists that the publishers have now made it available on CD-ROM. Larock's research has received 30 patents and he has written more than 130 publications. Larock has been a chemistry faculty member at Iowa State for 25 years.

Littrell is one of Iowa State's strongest advocates to expand international educational opportunities. She served on the task force that developed Iowa State's new curriculum requirements in cultural diversity and international relations. Littrell is known internationally for her expertise in marketing and entrepreneurship for textile crafts and ethnic products and for her cultural and ethnographic analysis of dress. Littrell has been at Iowa State for 18 years.

Orazem's papers have been published by leading economic journals. He is known for bringing real world experiences to his classroom, and is a respected expert on wage and labor issues. Orazem has been involved in several campus committees. He has been a faculty member at Iowa State since 1982, and is serving as interim associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
