STUDY COMMITTEE TO REVIEW ISU'S STUDENT NEWSPAPER

AMES, Iowa -- A six-member committee has been appointed to study the role of the "Iowa State Daily," the student newspaper at Iowa State University.

The members of the study committee are John Eighmey, chair of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication; Tom Emmerson, professor of journalism and communication; Sara Ziegler, ISU student; Fred Miller, Ames; H. Wilbert Norton, dean of the College of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Nebraska, Lincoln; and Allison Engel, Des Moines.

The study committee will examine the educational mission of the "Daily," the role of faculty and paid employees, governance of the newspaper, editorial independence, the use of university funds and facilities, compliance with state open meetings and open records laws, and laws and regulations on competition with private enterprise.

The study committee was formed as part of a settlement agreement between Iowa State and Partnership Press, owner of "The (Ames) Tribune." Partnership Press filed a lawsuit challenging Iowa State's policies on campus distribution of publications. The settlement was filed in U.S. District Court in Des Moines in June 1998.

The committee is expected to convene in December and complete its report to Iowa State University President Martin Jischke next spring 1999.
