CARTER NAMED DIRECTOR OF ISU'S PAPPAJOHN CENTER

AMES, Iowa -- Steve Carter, interim director of Iowa State University's Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship since it was established, has been named the first permanent director of the center. The appointment begins May 1.

"Steve has shown strong leadership as interim director and we're confident he can build the Pappajohn Center into a nationally-recognized center," said Ben Allen, dean of Iowa State's College of Business. "The center already has taken a leadership role in strengthening and marketing entrepreneurial efforts in the state. It will be a valuable resource for Iowa's continued economic development."

Located in ISU's Research Park, the Pappajohn Center is under the umbrella of the College of Business. The colleges of Agriculture, Engineering and Veterinary Medicine work closely with the College of Business to provide oversight to the center.

The center, established through a $1 million gift from Des Moines businessman John Pappajohn and his wife, Mary, helps entrepreneurs and technologists test and develop ideas and products into new or expanded businesses. The center's efforts focus on technologies developed by faculty and students in ISU's colleges of Agriculture, Engineering and Veterinary Medicine, but staff also are a resource for entrepreneurs state-wide through educational programs and individual outreach services.

In addition to his appointment as interim director, Carter has served as director of the ISU Small Business Development Center since 1990. He also is a former city manager and hospital administrator in Story City, Iowa.
