ISU FOUNDATION PRESENTS ANNUAL AWARDS FOR
PHILANTHROPY
AMES, Iowa -- The Iowa State University Foundation recognized individual and corporate philanthropic achievement at the university's annual Order of the Knoll celebration on the evening of Friday, Sept. 18.
"Thanks to alumni and friends such as tonight's award recipients, Iowa State is becoming transformed into the best land-grant university in the country," said ISU President Martin Jischke. "They are helping Iowa State to become a university that not only is charting its own destiny but also the destiny of the land-grant movement for the next century."
"The transformation of Iowa State begins with people who contribute vision, time, talents, energy, and the money to make it happen," said John Dasher, chair of the ISU Foundation Board of Directors, as he presented the awards. "The individuals we honor with our highest awards exemplify the greatest dedication and leadership to help Iowa State become the best."
The 1998 Order of the Knoll honorees are:
- Joe Baker, Johnston, the inaugural recipient of the
Order of the Knoll Young Alumni Award, which recognizes exemplary
service to community and dedication to Iowa State. Baker is a
member of the College of Agriculture Baker Council for Excellence
and is newly appointed to the ISU Foundation Governors. He also is
a member of the Board of Trustees, Institute for Transnational
Arbitration; Board of Trustees, National Symphony Orchestra; and
the Center for the Study of the Presidency. In his support of Iowa
State, Joe continues a family trend, which includes his uncle Lee,
as well as his late father, Laurence, and grandfather, Raymond,
both ISU graduates.
- John D. DeVries, president of DeVries Communications, Des
Moines, who received the Order of the Knoll Cardinal and
Gold Award for long-term service through creative leadership and
community interaction. The 1959 ISU is well known for his long-
term leadership involvement with the College of Business. He has
been active on the college's advisory council, helping to create
the college's Founders Fund Society in 1984 and serving as its
chair. A Foundation Governor since 1984, DeVries served as chair
of the board of directors from 1993-1995. He provided significant
leadership for the Partnership for Prominence capital campaign,
co-chairing the effort in Des Moines. He and his wife, Ruth, are
two of the co-chairs of the highly successful President's
Scholarship Campaign, which has produced almost $68 million in new
student scholarship commitments.
- W.K. Kellogg Foundation in Battle Creek, Mich.,
which received the Order of the Knoll Corporate/Foundation Award
for its distinguished partnership and unparalleled support of Iowa
State. Kellogg's contribution initiated Vision 2020, a program
involving Iowa State, Iowa's 15 community colleges, and the
state's food and fiber industry. One of its most significant gifts
to ISU, in collaboration with the University and Wallace Genetic
Foundation, established the Henry A. Wallace Endowed Chair for
Sustainable Agriculture. Iowa State is only the second land-grant
university in the country to have a chair in this discipline.
- Roy J. Reiman, Greendale, Wisc., awarded the Order
of the Knoll Campanile Award, which recognizes exemplary
philanthropy and outstanding dedication. The chief executive
officer of the largest private subscription-based publishing
company, Reiman is a dedicated philanthropist, is involved in
numerous community organizations, and with his wife, Bobbi, is a
leader among donors to Iowa State. A popular and witty speaker,
Roy motivates others to enjoy giving. This 1957 ISU agricultural
journalism graduate has lent his name to the popular Reiman
Gardens even though much of his giving -- broad and varied --
frequently is done anonymously. An ISU Foundation Governor, Roy is
an enthusiastic, energetic contributor who attributes much of his
success to his Iowa State education.
The Order of the Knoll is the university's most prominent donor recognition club. It began in 1968 with 65 charter households and today numbers more than 3,000 individuals.
Knoll members have been the backbone of Iowa State's three successful fund-raising campaigns, including most recently "Campaign Destiny: To Become the Best." Collectively, they have provided some 60 percent of the campaign's $300-million goal. In addition to their generous financial support, Order of the Knoll members provide leadership on advisory councils, act as mentors, give campus lectures, sponsor internships and more.
