ISU OPENS NEW EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY CENTER
AMES, Iowa -- A new center that will examine the role of technology in teaching and learning has opened at Iowa State University's College of Education.
The college of education will formally open the new Center for Technology in Learning and Teaching on Monday, Sept. 22, with a program called "Iowa Collaboratives: Advancing Technology in Learning and Teaching." The day-long program will include an opening ceremony at 5:30 p.m. in the courtyard of Lagomarcino Hall. President Martin Jischke and Iowa Lt. Gov. Joy Corning will speak at the ceremony.
John Bransford, centennial professor and co-director of the Learning Technology Center at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., will deliver a keynote address at 7 p.m. in 117 MacKay Hall.
The Center for Technology in Learning and Teaching was created to conduct research, develop and evaluate instructional technologies and their applications in learning and teaching, said center director E. Ann Thompson.
"Computers, the Internet and other technologies pose many challenges and opportunities for teachers currently in the classroom and their students, as well as teacher education students in our
universities," said Thompson. "The Center for Technology in Learning and Teaching will be an important resource for faculty, staff, students, and Iowa educators who are interested in examining the impact and role of technology in education."
Among the goals of the center are conducting theory-based and theory-building research on applications of technology in teaching and learning; studying appropriate and ethical uses of technologies in education; facilitating the use of instructional technologies and developing student-centered learning activities that use instructional technologies.
Among the current projects the center will be involved with are the use of Internet-based weather forecasting in a meteorology class; studying the impact of distance education on teachers and students; and developing a model program integrating technology throughout the teacher education curriculum.
The college's Instructional Resources Center has been incorporated into the Center for Technology in Learning and Teaching. The new center will located N108 Lagomarcino Hall.
"Iowa Collaboratives: Advancing Technology in Learning and Teaching" is designed for K-16 educators interested in education technology, though it is free and open to everyone. Space is limited, however, and anyone interested in attending should make reservations by calling (515) 294-3147.
"Iowa Collaboratives" will include programs on the future of technology in learning and teaching and funding for technology instruction, as well as a tour of the new center.
Among those participating in the programs Kevin Arundel, U.S. Department of Education senior research associate; Ted Stillwell, Iowa Department of Education Director; Pamela Adams Johnson, director of educational telecommunications for Iowa Public Television; Camilla Benbow, College of Education interim dean; Jischke, and Thompson.
