HILLY TERRAIN KEEPS TEAM PRISUM FROM FINISH LINE

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's Team PrISUm traveled about 105 miles of today's leg of Sunrayce 97 before succumbing to the hills of Missouri.

At 7 p.m., Team PrISUm was recharging their batteries near the town of Knob Noster, Mo. They will continue to charge their batteries and trailer the rest of the way into Lee's Summit, Mo., the overnight spot for day four of Sunrayce 97. Team PrISUm began the day in 27th place after three days of racing.

MIT is the overall leader of Sunrayce 97 and was the first car in today. They finished today's leg in 3 hours, 26 minutes and 45 seconds for an average speed of 45.5 mph. California State University, Los Angeles is second in the overall standings (finishing fifth today with an average speed of 43.6 mph), and the University of Waterloo is third overall (finishing second today with an average speed of 45 mph). These unofficial standings do not take into account any penalties assessed against the teams.

"The hills were killing us," said Beth Hunter, director of Team PrISUm. "The car continues to run well, but because of the lack of sunshine we had to race the entire day at around 20 mph to conserve energy. We went as far as we could. When our batteries got too low, we pulled over and started to recharge."

Monday is an off day for all of the race teams. It will give them time to recharge their batteries, as they have had to contend with overcast skies and hazy, humid weather.

Sunrayce 97 hits the road again on Tuesday (June 24) and will race from Lee's Summit to Manhattan, Kan., a distance of 152 miles.

Sunrayce 97 coincides with the week of the summer solstice. The 1,230-mile race began June 19 in Indianapolis and ends June 28 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
