DAY OF STRATEGY PAYS OFF FOR TEAM PRISUM
AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's Team PrISUm used
strategy to push the ExCYtor car through the hills of
Missouri and complete the 165-mile course in roughly 7 hours
and 40 minutes. The strategy to go slow and steady helped
keep their car moving despite another cloudy and hazy day
during Sunrayce 97.
ExCYtor was the 21st car to finish today's 165-mile leg of
Sunrayce 97, from Godfrey, Ill., to Fulton, Mo. Team PrISUm
began the day in 33rd place after two days of racing.
MIT is the overall leader of Sunrayce 97. They finished
today's leg in 4 hours 4 minutes and 30 seconds for an
average speed of 40.6 mph for the day. California State
University, Los Angeles (40.2 mph) is second in the overall
standings followed by the University of Waterloo (39.3).
These unofficial standings do not take into account any
penalties the teams may be assessed.
"We're ecstatic that we made it across the finish line," said
Team PrISUm member Mikael Brown. "This was a complete day of
strategy. Because it was cloudy, most teams held back and
traveled 20 to 25 mph. Our electrical systems ran perfect,
mechanical ran perfect. Towards the end of the day, the Sun
came out and we sped up."
"We really didn't think we'd make it all the way through
today," added Team PrISUm director Beth Hunter. "We tried to
conserve energy and run as efficiently as possible and it
paid off."
Tomorrow's leg of Sunrayce is 156 miles from Fulton to Lee's
Summit, Mo., which is just southeast of Kansas City, Mo.
Monday is an off day for all of the solar car teams.
Sunrayce 97 coincides with the week of the summer solstice.
The 1,230-mile race began June 19 in Indianapolis and ends
June 28 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
